Moderated Forum with Audience & Viewer Participation

The Vietnam War was a contentious time in American history, and those affected by it have struggled for years to reconcile their experiences and emotions. More than 40 years later, the scars remain for many — and for some, the wounds have yet to heal.

Partnering with Soldier On, a national nonprofit aimed at providing veterans with shelter and support, WGBY has brought together a panel of veterans, historians, and experts before a live studio audience for a productive dialogue about the local impact and ramifications of the Vietnam War.

According to WGBY General Manager Anthony V. Hayes, the discussion will provide a forum for local voices and regional perspectives.

“The impact and enduring legacy of the Vietnam War continues to warrant frank discussion,” Hayes explains. “Our live studio audience will participate along with our at-home viewers, who can submit questions and comments using social media hashtag #wgbydialogue. It’s important that public television foster these healing discussions, and I’m proud we are able to do that here at WGBY for western New England.”

Reflecting on the Vietnam War: A Community Dialogue will be hosted by WGBY’s Carrie Saldo, who hopes the programming inspires productive discourse within our community.

“Veterans Day is our time as a nation to pause to honor and remember those who have sacrificed so much for our country and is a perfect moment to shine a light on many of our local veterans who served so bravely,” Saldo says. “With the Veterans Day Connecting Point Special: Never Forget, followed by a live Community Dialogue about the impact of the Vietnam War locally, we hope to offer a voice to those here in Western New England who were so deeply affected by war and conflict.”

Reflecting on the Vietnam War: A Community Dialogue airs Thursday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. Participate before, during, and after the programming using Facebook and Twitter hashtag #wgbydialogue.
