Susan Kaplan, host of WatercoolerJudi's Book

My sister-in-law Judi's birthday is on Christmas. Ten years ago I gave her the novel I had enjoyed reading the most that year. Ten years later the tradition continues. My children know about Judi's Book and it has turned a regular old passion for reading into a delightful exploration. As I read throughout the year I always wonder if the book I'm reading might make it to the list. I profess absolutely no background in literary criticism. The list is as subjective as possible. I pass it along as such.

 Handmaiden's Tale by Margaret Atwood

A Glimpse of Scarlet by Roxana Robinson

I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb

 Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles

The Third Child by Marge Piercy

Black Bird House by Alice Hoffman

Naked in Baghdad by Anne Garrels

Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage by Alice Monro

 Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood

On Beauty by Zadie Smith, A Million Little Pieces by James Frey
