What is the Indian Stream Republic?
Indian Stream Republic bounded by the Connecticut River and three of
the Connecticut Lakes on the south and east,
by the Highlands on the north, and Halls Stream on the west, came into
being in 1832 due to uncertainty about which stream was "the northernmost
head of the Connecticut River"--and with neither the US nor Canada
exercising effective jurisdiction over the area. The existence of the
republic was ended by New Hampshire in 1835, and Halls Stream was designated
as the boundary by the Webster -Ashburton Treaty of 1842.
