Prehistoric Life in Holyoke
Isn’t it exciting to think that 230 million years ago, dinosaurs
walked the land of Holyoke? But how do we know this? That question can
be answered with a little detective work and some help from science.
In
a time period called the Mesozoic Era, the earth’s crust was moving
and shifting, forming the lay of the land of the Connecticut River Valley.
During this time, our area received earthy deposits called sediments
which made perfect places for dinosaurs to leave their tracks. Later
on, about 18,000 years ago, Lake Hitchcock formed, which protected the
dinosaur tracks from wind and weather. Scientists believe that the ancient
feet of the Anchisauripus and Grallator left their tracks upon the lands
of Holyoke.
