The Nature of Mount Tom

Mt. Tom & HolyokeFrom the top of Mount Tom to the bottom of the Connecticut River, the range of species native to the Holyoke area are as diverse as its people. Holyoke is home to the migrating shad and salmon, rare and endangered snakes, and many different animals in between. The river itself is rich in resident and migrating fish, mollusks, and aquatic insects.

While on top of Mount Tom, large and small animals of many kinds roam about the conservation lands managed by non profit organizations and government agencies. Due to the Holyoke range’s east-went facing orientation, varied topography, or lay of the land, and rich volcanic soils, it supports a great diversity of plant and animal life.
