Holyoke’s Culture

Celebrate Holoke Festival 2003From its beginnings as “Ireland Parish”, Holyoke was a crossroad for the people arriving in America looking for new opportunities. Beginning with the English and the Irish, followed by French Canadian, Polish, Greeks, Italians, Germans, and now, most recently, Puerto Rican- each group of people has enriched the city with their unique cultures and perspectives.

Each new immigrant population brought their own kind of religion, and eventually their own church to the city. Holyoke is home to many beautiful churches, built in many different styles.

Holyoke today is a grand mix of culture, art, and architecture, or building style. From Irish to Puerto Rican, Polish to French Canadian, you can find many examples of their footprints in the city. Each year they all gather together in the summer to “Celebrate Holyoke” in a festival that brings in tens of thousands from Holyoke and beyond to celebrate the culture and history of Holyoke.

Another favorite celebration in Holyoke is the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the second largest in the nation! Every year, marching bands, clubs, children, and many more all gather together to celebrate a holiday very important to the Irish heritage as well as in the culture of Holyoke.
